So this whole slow-boiling revolution thing has mostly been stirred up by one big mistake - the humiliation and torture of the sorcerer Alzurra Petra who was a bad dude of the first degree and profited off a low-key slave trade. When they finally decided they were sick of him, they took his eyes and tongue, but that didn't stop him from cursing the whole city.
It takes the form of a plague, passed by a touch or by cough, and within three days the victims are barely able to move under the weight of the gold growing beneath their flesh. First it calcifies their skeleton, and then grows outwards, especially on the face, leaving the victims enmasked.
Of course, as afraid as people are, gold is gold. Desperate scavengers drag the diseased away in the streets to chisel them apart. Gold itself and the foundation of the aristocrach has become suspect, and the rule of law that brought this vengeance is spat upon.
